Happy New Year, Internet

Happy New Year, Internet! I hope it’s a good one. I think it will be.

I’m glad to see that Malaysia isn’t wasting any time getting a good sex scandal going for 2008 — hi there Dr. Chua Soi Lek! And thanks to Technorati for letting us know about these. How would we ever know that a country was getting all worked up over something minor if not for Technorati? Anyone remember NYP Tammy? Wait, was that Malaysia or Singapore? Shoot. I’m going to say Malaysia. Anyway, people are still finding my old posts being amazed at the NYP Tammy saga, long after everyone else has forgotten. Way to beat the dead horse! Are they still trying to download the video? Good luck.

Malaysia’s sex scandal for 2008 is another leaked sex video, but this time the star is the country’s health minister, Chua Soi Lek. Someone set up an elaborate hidden camera thing (with four angles) to record him having sex with someone — who wasn’t his wife — and leaked it out on DVD (and, presumably, the Interwebs.)

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek admitted he is the politician in the sex DVD circulating in Johor. In a press conference here Tuesday, Dr Chua said the girl is his “personal friend”. He apologised to the Malaysian public, supporters and his colleagues. He said he did not make the tape himself. Dr Chua said he will not resign over the sex DVD. He will leave that up to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to decide. The sex DVD had been circulating in Muar, Tangkak and Batu Pahat over the past few days.

And apparently that’s enough for the public — or at least the Malaysian blogging public — to demand a resignation:

RESIGN now chua, you are not morally fit to be a minister or leader. i’m surprise that he’s not resigning, you are married, yet you are …… with another woman . i know that someone framed you up by fixing the cameras but are your act right ? if you are gentlemen enough resign asap. i wonder are the pm,dpm and mca president don’t mind with what he has done? are they trying to give the message to malaysian that what soi lek did was not wrong? if yes , then i demand the three of them to resign too.

After all, they’re not a Western country and so sex videos should be punishable by resignation, or at least the top search on Technorati for several months (at least if you’re a girl):

for god sake we are not western country and our religion does not allow such act, so don’t make it as a natural thing.as a leader we have to shown example to the ones we lead.forgive me too but i have to differ too.

Ah, religion. What can’t religion do? Awesome stuff.

I think this is a call to action for America’s Republicans to hurry up and get on the map for sex-based weirdness in 2008. Sure, 2007 was full of gay airport bathrooms and gay prostitutes (oops, I guess a lot of those were all Larry Craig) and, well, lots of gayness. The Democrats tried to get on board with a small dash of pedophilia late in the year, but it wasn’t able to compete with the Republican perversion deluge. Here’s hoping 2008 lives up to those lofty ideals set back in 2007.

Here’s hoping all politicians everywhere make their new year’s resolutions about conducting a funny sex scandal. Now that’s a resolution I can support. After all, it makes the country laugh, and isn’t that the most important thing for a politician to do?
