Reaching Demonoid During Their Downtime

I haven’t been able to get to the Bittorrent site Demonoid for most of the day. It was finally down long enough that I went and did some digging (no pun intended), and came up with some answers and a workaround.

When I ask my Comcast DNS server for the Demonoid nameservers, I get dns[1-5].nettica.com, none of which return any addresses for demonoid. If I check the whois record, it lists ns[1-5].demonoid.com as the nameservers, with completely different IPs than the nettica ones. It also reports a modification date of today (May 17), so I guess they’re changing things around. Those DNS servers do return addresses for Demonoid queries, which work just fine if you use them.

So the site’s up, but it might be a day or so while your ISP’s nameservers cache the old info until you can reach it. Or just stick something like this in your hosts file if you don’t want to wait:

85.17.42.202 www.demonoid.com
85.17.42.202 demonoid.com
85.17.42.204 inferno.demonoid.com

And then it all magically starts working again. Good work, magical Internet elves! Happy demoning!
