Tonight’s Winner is Taylor Hicks
Yeah, I watched American Idol last night. I can’t say that I really wanted to watch it, but it was essentially out of my hands. It was almost worth it because of the two hilarious moments:
- Katharine’s mom with her hands over her mouth looking like “OMG this is like totally the most amazing thing ever OMG! PONIES!”
- Constantine Maroulis looking totally pissed to be in the audience and not up on stage butchering yet another song. Or maybe he was pissed because he was right behind Kellie Pickler and was no doubt having to hear her talk the whole night. Poor guy.
But aside from that, there was some singing. My thoughts? Do you really care? I didn’t think so, but here they are anyway.
Katharine McPhee: First song was average, second was good but not as good as the first time she did it, and the third just completely stunk up the place. Oh my God, that was a horrible performance. The song wasn’t good, but that’s no excuse for singing it that poorly. Maybe it was all just in a bad spot in her range, but then she shouldn’t have even tried.
And revealing that she was getting the note to start on for Somewhere Over the Rainbow through her ear monitor? That made the first performance of that song so much less impressive; that was one of the things that blew me away the first time, that she started right on pitch. Oh well. She’s still prettier than Taylor!
Taylor Hicks. Dunno, I have to say I wasn’t as blown away last night as I was on other nights. The last song, the “single,” just wasn’t a very good song. But he turned in solid, good performances, which is enough to beat Katharine. Technorati searchers agree, with “American Idol” the top search right now, “Taylor Hicks” the number 9 search right now, and Kat not making any appearance in the top 15 at all.
And yeah, Taylor is going to win tonight. There’s not much question. Look at the DialIdol results, and it’s pretty much a landslide. Taylor’s three phone numbers were busy 82% of the time, and Katharine’s numbers were busy between 65% and 67% of the time. That’s a pretty definitive victory for Taylor, and if he doesn’t win tonight, it’ll be pretty clear proof that they’re faking the results.
To be honest, I can’t see that happening. I don’t buy into all the conspiracy tinfoil hat theories. I mean, I’d guess that if they were manipulating results, they would have made Chris Daughtry win the whole thing. It just makes sense for them to stay out of the way and let the most popular person (as measured by the votes) win.
I also have to admit that know that DialIdol is revealing the results early like this, I have even less interest in sitting through a two hour finale tonight. Yeah, it wasn’t at the top of my list of Favorite Things To Do Before I Die to begin with, but now even less so. So I guess Fox has every right to be mad at DialIdol; if there are others like me, they may be out a few viewers. Maybe 10. That’s a loss of many advertising pennies. Poor Fox. I’ll send them a “feel better soon” card when I go a little more insane.
